Ol' Curiosities and Book Shoppe
Our Business: A History in Brief

Ol' Curiosities and Book Shoppe all began with owner Spencer Madrie's love of books. The idea of owning a book store was something that had been brewing in Spencer's mind for quite some time. It has always been hard for him to pass by a thrift store, a flea market, or library without wanting to go in and see what he could find.

However, Spencer had recently started college, and he didn't have the time or the ambition needed to start a store.  At that point, he was just happy to continue collecting books.

Then, in 2012, Spencer's mom, Ann Mote, had trouble finding a job with the economy being in the state it was in. Ann tried working at a temp service, but the temp service couldn’t offer enough stability and the work was too far from home to be profitable.

Spencer and Ann tossed around some ideas… and at last, they came up with the idea of opening a business.  Since Ann had run a few small shops before, and Spencer was really fond of the idea, they decided that entrepreneurship was the right direction to head.  Deciding on the type of business they would run was quite easy -- Spencer had a storage unit full of old books, and Ann had the time to open and manage the Shoppe.

…and that's how Ol' Curiosities and Book Shoppe was born.

The physical storefront opened in May of 2012,  and an Etsy store also opened at that time. Since opening, Ol' Curiosities and Book Shoppe has been able to move from the original store location to a new and larger location. Kristen Chandler, was also added to the team as the company’s office manager and helps Ann oversee the day-to-day activities of the Shoppe.

In their spare time, Spencer, Kristen and Ann like to spend time with their families, read, and hit up estate sales and thrift stores looking for new "old" books.

"Here at Ol' Curiosities we love books, and there is no greater joy for us than finding homes for our books with our beloved customers. Thank you so much for stopping by our page, and reading our story. We would not be where we are today if it weren’t for you, our wonderful customers.”

-Spencer, Ann, and Kristen

Spencer Madrie Profile
My name is Spencer Madrie-- and to some it would seem I have a book fetish--but in my eyes I see it as a intense love for books.  I am the owner of the Shoppe.
Ann Mote Profile
Hi there! I have studied business at Gadsden Business College and managed several small businesses.  I am Spencer's Mom and currently oversee the everyday activities of the Shoppe.
Hi, I'm Kristen! I'm a mom of 3 and a self-proclaimed book nerd. I love to read books, collect them, and sometimes just look at them! I do a lot of things here at the Shoppe, but the thing I love best about my job is being surrounded by books!
