Be warned, if you're going to read Peter Huggins' Trosclair and the Alligator, prepare to read it again..and again..and probably at least one more time. Peter Huggins uses simple dialog and colorful characters to paint your little ones Fountaine Bayou. Trosclair and his little dog Ollie take a pirogue on adventures in the aptly names Bee Island Swamp. This story is almost as fun to look at as it is to read. Lindsey Gardiner blends a multitude of artistic styles to create a whimsical bayou and it's fearsome inhabitant, Gargantua the alligator. Although this story is a classic David and Goliath tale, colorful Cajun dialect and visually engaging illustrations blend together to make it a new favorite for young readers.

Introduce your kids and grandkids to Trosclair and his folks today. You’ll be glad you did.
Trosclair and the Alligator is not only a fun read full of action and adventure, it’s a great book to open doors for parents who want to teach their children about other cultures. Kids are not only bound to be interested in what happens to Trosclair and his dog, Ollie, when they encounter the gigantic alligator on their trip to Bee Swamp Island, they are bound to want to know about Trosclair’s mode of transportation, a pirogue, and about life in the Louisiana bayou.

As a child and young teen, I was exposed to much of the culture in and around Louisiana and Mississippi, and I love that this book introduces a few not-so-typical American cultural concepts to young readers—and that it even precipitated a discussion in my own family amongst my tween and teen when they saw me reading it.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to parents and their little ones. Introduce your kids and grandkids to Trosclair and his folks today. You’ll be glad you did.
